On our journey in Acts
For the past 6 weeks I have had the pleasure of preaching on the ministry of the Early church in Acts and digging deeper into those texts in the connections Sunday school class.
A lot of people have asked, why I haven’t been preaching the Gospel text.
And yes, we have missed the opportunity to dwell in some great Gospel texts in our lectionary during this time. But as I looked at the stories in Acts about the Spirit moving in Earthquakes, in visions, in women leaders, and in new beginnings—it just seemed like the story of Acts might also be our story at Grace right now.
We are doing new things, we’ve got a new mission, we have new leadership, and the Spirit is moving!
Thankfully not in earthquakes or jailbreaks, but in new lights and a new roof that we worked hard to come together on and make our facilities safe and welcoming for everyone.
The Spirit is moving, in new Sunday school classes and activities for children and youth.
The spirit is moving here in Thomasville in the incredible ways we have connected to our community through Trunk or Treat, the Easter Egg Hunt, Sandwich Ministry, and our continued partnership with CCM.
The spirit is moving in a vision being set by strong leaders in our congregation and by the welcome we show people entering in every Sunday.
The story of the early church in acts is very much our story at Grace Lutheran Thomasville as we seek to discern the places the Spirit is still moving, as we listen for God’s call to us to continue to serve the needs of our community, and as we continue to live into our name, Grace.
As we head into our last week in Acts, where the Spirit is so present in the rush of a wind, tongues of fire, and languages may we remember that though it looks a little different than it did for those first disciples at Pentecost, the Spirit is present in our ministry each and every day.
Amen.
